Come walk the RFDS Somme Stride 2019.
A checkpoint to checkpoint walking challenge.

RFDS Somme Stride 2019

Day One

10.00hrs: Meet the coach at Ebbsfleet International Station and travel to Folkestone for the Euro Tunnel Crossing at 12.30hrs.
There are fast trains from St. Pancras Station to Ebbsfleet every 15 minutes or you may choose to utilise the ample secure Parking.
15.00hrs: Check into our tour base the Ibis Cathedral Hotel, Amiens.
18.00hrs: Meet for a welcome drink and historic context briefing before the evening meal.

Evening meal and breakfast included.


RFDS Somme Stride 2019

Day Two

Breakfast followed by demonstrations:

  1. Signalling- “The Fog of War” An exercise in the use of flags and Morse-code messages.
  2. Cooking- “The Mess Tin Challenge” Using ‘Hexi-burners’, wartime ingredients & period mess tins.
  3. Medical – “Stretcher Bearers” Problem solving in casualty evacuation using wartime medical equipment.
  4. Archaeology – Underground experience at the Glory Hole site La Boiselle.

Afternoon AIF Battlefield walking tour of Pozieres/Mouquet Farm area.
A group evening meal & team quiz to end the day.

Breakfast & evening meal included.

Day Three

Challenge Event Day (Historic points unmanned but info provided/check points manned):

  1. Start Point – Adelaide Cemetery (Australian Unknown Warrior site)
  2. Historic Point II/Check Point A – Monash Centre/Australian National Memorial Villers Bretonneux – (Check Point at the top of the Bell Tower/Viewing Platform)
  3. Historic Point III – Australian Corps Memorial, Le Hamel.
  4. Historic Point IV – The Somme River.
  5. Historic Point V – Third Australian Division Memorial Morlancourt.
  6. Historic Point VI/Check Point B -Beacon CWGC (Anzac Actions on Morlancourt Ridge) 25KM /15.5 miles.
  7. Historic Point VII/Check Point C –  Dernancourt.

Breakfast, packed lunch on the walk, evening meal and prize giving ceremony.

Day Four

After breakfast we conclude the trip with a visit to the City of Arras and the Arras Memorial to the missing with the Flying Services memorial which lists Lieutenant Clifford Peel of No 3 Squadron Australian Flying Corps who went missing in 1918.

12.30hrs: Euro Tunnel crossing Calais to Folkestone.
15.30hrs: Arrive at Ebbsfleet.

Breakfast included.
